Tips to Help Your Child Stay Organized

Staying organized is important for everyone. It is best to teach your kids to be organized with respect to their belongings and studies. It will make their life comfortable. The task requires some effort from the parents. It may appear tough in the beginning but gradually both the child and the parent get used to it. Here are some tips from Om Public School that will enable you to help your kid learn organization skills.

To-do lists are a must

Begin by helping the child make a to-do list or the tasks-at-hand list. Let them combine both homework and the small household chores that they do in one list. Let them pin-up this list and see it at regular intervals to know what is left to be done and what’s been done. They can even tick off the tasks completed. Even smartphones or other such devices can be used to prepare and store the list. If the kid has a whiteboard at home, they can use it to prepare the list.

Smaller manageable steps

When it comes to doing school assignments and other chores, it is better to break the tasks into smaller steps defining, beginning, middle and end. The child will not only learn to manage the task at hand but will not get overwhelmed by it, suggests Om Public School

Time management

Let the kids come up with allocating time to each task roughly. Together both of you can estimate the time taken to complete the entire task. Encourage them to complete the task in the stipulated time. If the time estimate wasn’t accurate, they can be made to adjust in the next task. This will teach the kid time management which is very important to stay organized.

Set daily routines

There should be a permanent schedule that will guide the kids to sail through the day with their tasks. This way they will remain focused and not go haywire.

Organized notebooks

Teach the kids to organize their notebooks. Keep them neat and tidy. Even when they write in it, they must follow the lines and columns to do neat work. Workbooks and textbooks must also be kept clean and organized.

Memory aids

Memory aids can be employed to remember difficult topics and things while studying. Come up with your mnemonic using sentences, cartoons, or songs. Even passwords can be remembered using self-created memory aids.

Organized study space

If there is more than one kid at home, assign them the spaces in the house in such a way that both can do their work peacefully without any kind of interruption. The parent must try to stay nearby to provide them with timely help and also to keep tabs on them. Teach them to keep their school supplies, laptops, and calculators in order. And keep their study-desk and bookshelves clean.

Backpack audits

Backpack audits are important every day. Parents must audit their bags along with them to check for notes or circulars sent by the school. Also, bags must be organized. It must be cleaned often. A day can be fixed to clean the bag.

Teach them to plan

Thinking ahead and planning must be taught to kids. You must sit down with them to plan the day. This will give a clear idea about what’s in store the next day. Planning will instil a sense of security in them. This will be helpful to them even in the future. Also teach them to manage sudden changes that may occur and disturb their plan.
